Back in the 90s, halogen lights were very popular when it came to home decoration. They are white, bright and are excellent for highlighting certain areas at home. They were a huge hit back then up until people started seeing their downsides.
The main drawback is their inefficiency. They eat up too much energy to a point that people using them pay too much for their bills at home. This is true for those using downlights as spotlights. Even with the invention of low voltage halogen downlights, people still end up paying a lot. This is due to the number of halogen lights used in the entire home. Besides, even if it is low voltage, it could still end up taking up too much energy, and they won’t help your goal of reduced electric consumption at all.
Lifespan is also another issue. Halogen lights may last longer than previous incandescent bulbs, but not long enough to be a huge impact on the maintenance cost. They are also made from plastic frames that are prone to fire especially since the halogen lights easily heat up.
In general, they are expensive to run, not too safe and have high maintenance costs. Given these reasons, LED lights became a better alternative.
The new generation
With LED lights, people found an actual alternative that solves all the previous problems they had with halogen lights. To begin with, these lights are designed to last for a really long time. Some LED lights even claim to last for up to 20 years. Imagine using lights that require low maintenance and can last this long.
Another reason is that the build quality has changed. It makes use of aluminium which is safe against increased temperature when used over a longer period of time. There are also more colour choices for LED lights. For people who want to use the lights for aesthetic purposes, they are perfect.
The best part is that LED lights such as the GU10 LED are efficient. They don’t make use of energy that leads to high electric bills. Those who use downlights for spotlights can now save a lot of money. Even if used over a long period, it won’t be a big deal. According to reports, LED lights use only 25% of the energy used by halogen lights to produce the same amount of light.
Given these reasons, it should no longer come as a surprise that LED downlights have replaced halogen lights as the go-to lighting option at home and in many other instances. You should consider shifting to these lights even just for certain areas at home.
