As the heat of the summer is coming on, everyone’s right to be worried about how they’re going to keep cool. For those who have an air conditioner, it might seem like a no-brainer. However, if you haven’t been taking good care of your a/c unit, it might not function the way you’re hoping it will. So to help you save yourself some money and ensure that your home is as cool as you want it to be, here are three ways you can make your air conditioner more efficient this summer.

Do A Periodic Cleaning

Just like with most things in your house, it your air conditioner is sitting for too long, it can get buildups of dirt and grime on it. When this happens, the best thing you can do is to clean the unit. According to Brent Rose, a contributor to Gizmodo.com, your a/c unit has a filter that you should clean on a regular basis. You can do this by rinsing it and wiping it out with a sponge before replacing it back in your unit. Additionally, there is also a coil that you should try to keep clean. You can clean this part of your unit by spraying it with water to remove any debris or buildup that’s gotten on it.

Upgrade Your Thermostat

Another great way you can use your air conditioner more efficiently is to get an overall more efficient heating and cooling system with a smart thermostat. Without a smart thermostat, you’re left remembering when and where you should set your heating or cooling to only use the amount of energy needed in that moment. But according to Alina Bradford, a contributor to CNET.com, upgrading to a smart thermostat can take all the guesswork out of your a/c setting. Not only will it help to keep your home a comfortable temperature and use your heating and cooling systems efficiently, but it can also help to save you a lot of money on your utility bills each month.

Use In Conjunction With Fans

Many people use their air conditioner more than they actually need to. There are quite a few things you can do that will maximize the cool air in your home without having to blast your a/c. According to Natalie Keithly, a contributor to Angie’s List, using your air conditioner in conjunction with fans in your home can help better circulate the cool air and keep your whole home feel more comfortable in the summer. So before you turn your a/c on full blast, try using your ceiling fans or other fans to help move that small amount of cool air around and really chill things off in a more efficient way.

If you want to make better use of your air conditioner, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you do just that.
