Backyard Designs

When you have a little extra time on your hands, consider a few backyard projects that can change the appearance of the area while adding function for the entire family. Whether it’s creating a relaxing place for the family to enjoy the outdoors or a space where you can entertain family and friends, there are numerous projects that don’t take a lot of time or money.

The first thing that you need to do is look at the space that you have to work with. You don’t want to add too much to the yard as a small area will look overcrowded. Use the natural landscape of the yard to add stones and waterfalls, creating a relaxing area where you can enjoy a book or spend time talking with family and friends after a long day.

If there are a lot of weeds and dead bushes in the yard, push them back and create a space with pathways made of rocks and large stones. This will give the yard a bit of vibrancy, especially if you add lights along the pathways or flowers in gardens that you create near the stones. Use bright colors, such as lavender and daffodils to give a pop of color. A barren plot of land is often the easiest to work with. You can add a deck to the back of the house, or you can create an oasis with a grilling area, a swing or hammock and a place to sit. A yard that looks like a park is sometimes a wonderful creation as you can place a cover over a few chairs or a gazebo. Place a fountain in the center of the yard as well to give more of a feeling of being in a park while outside.

At times, your backyard might be more of a collection site for old pieces of wood and items that are no longer used in the home. Remove all of these items to make a picture-perfect setting. A two-level cedar deck along with furniture that has bright cushions can add a spark to the yard. Design a flower bed in front of the deck for a beautiful area to look at while sitting on the deck.
