Let’s face it, finding the motivation to get in shape can be tough. However, there is a simple way to put a rocket under your fitness regime. By signing up to a physical fundraising challenge, you’ll give yourself a clear goal to work towards – and you’ll get the added satisfaction that comes from knowing the calories you burn will benefit others.

Set your sights on a fundraising challenge

The crucial first step is finding a suitable fundraising challenge. You’ll need to select one that will stretch you physically and require plenty of preparation, but at the same time you have to be realistic. For instance, if you’ve never run more than a few metres, there’s no point in signing up to a marathon in a month’s time. This will put you under too much pressure and, in all likelihood, set you up to fail.

Luckily, there are plenty of challenges to choose from, so you shouldn’t struggle to find one that stretches you just enough. The websites of charities such as Human Appeal are a good place to start your research. You can get the details of everything from 10k runs to half and full marathons. Or, if you prefer to move at a slightly slower pace and enjoy some impressive scenery while you exercise, you could sign up to a charity trek. For example, a number of university Somali societies are taking part in a fundraising trek up the slopes of Snowdon in February to raise money for Human Appeal.

As well as picking a challenge that suits your skill level and interests, it’s important to find a cause you feel passionate about. This should give you added motivation when you’re working up a sweat.

Start your training

The best way to get fit before the big event is to set yourself a series of smaller targets to meet along the way. For example, if you’re attempting a 10k and you’re not used to running, your first goal could be to make it around the block without stopping. You could then build this up to doing 5k jogs without a pause, before eventually making it to 10k.

Make sure you give yourself a break in the few days before your challenge though. You don’t want to line up at the start of a run, hike or cycle with tired legs.

Raise some money!

The more money you manage to raise, the more incentive you’ll have to complete the challenge, so make sure you spread the word about your charity event. As well as asking family and friends to contribute, you might want to do a collection at work. Think about setting up a fundraising page too to make it easier for people to donate, and remember to get the message out there on social media. You might be surprised by how much money you’re able to raise.
