You wouldn’t try to use your health insurance to pay for new set of dentures, so why would you expect horse insurance to be the same all the way around? There’re multiple insurance policies to choose from, and selecting just write one can mean the difference between scrambling together thousands of dollars to pay for the recovery fees of your injured four-legged friend, or being able sit back and know that your horse is in good hands.

There’re several factors that influence how much insurance you might need. Think about it: if you had to replace your horse, how much would it cost to bring a brand-new horse to the same level your current horse is? Think about it the amount you paid for your horse, the amount of money you’ve invested into training with your horse, it’s competition records, and its breeding record. All of these are good way to figure in the amount of insurance coverage you will need for your horse.

You should also decide whether you need mortality insurance for if you were more interested in having only medical and surgical insurance. Keep in mind that medical and surgical policies do not cover vaccines and dental treatment, but are reserved for more intensive, more in depth procedures.

On the other hand, just as you have health insurance for yourself, you also have life insurance. It’s always a good idea to have Life insurance for your horse as well. What you don’t want to think about the worst happening, it’s irresponsible not to plan for every possible outcome.

When you begin your search for insurance, take your time and do your research on the various policies and choose the one that best fits your needs and your horse’s needs. The peace of mind it will bring you is invaluable.
