A lot of people use dog carriers, because they leave their pets safe and comfortable during transport, particularly if the dog is small to medium size. However, there are no so many different dog carriers on the market that it may feel a bit overwhelming. Hopefully, the following tips will help you choose the one that is right for you.

Picking Dog Carriers

  1. Think about how you will use the carrier. If you intend to travel long distances, you need a crate type of carrier with a hard site. This works for larger dogs as well. Plus, they make it easy to clean up ‘accidents’ when they do happen.
  2. Smaller dogs like duffels and totes, leaving them feeling secure in a small nest. If you intend to go to an outdoor event or a walk, then a carrier that is shaped like a duffel or tote is perfect for the event. They usually have a zipper so that your dog won’t escape, and have mesh netting for fresh air.
  3. Pets like being close to their humans, so if you do have a small dog, you may want to choose a doggie backpack, or a sling.
  4. For the real designer dogs, which tend to be incredibly small, you can get a purse carrier. These now come in lots of different colors and styles and they really help you to turn your dog into not just an excellent companion, but a stylish fashion accessory as well. Do remember, however, that all dogs need regular exercise, so don’t carry it everywhere.
  5. The wheel carrier is also quite popular and most resembles a rolling suitcase. This is a pretty good option for medium sized dogs, that are too heavy to carry with you in a bag. Alternatively, if you have back problems or other such issues, then these carriers are also an ideal solution.

It is usually a good idea to purchase a few different dog carriers for different occasions. For local vet travel or shopping or lunch trips, you could get a small bag type of carrier. If you go on a long distance by car or other modes of transport, you will need a slightly bigger one that allows your dog a bit more of a degree of movement but also keeps your animal safe during bumps on the road. If you plan to use an airplane, you will have to get a special dog trade that meets all the airline’s security elements. Most hard dog carriers also have added space for things like bowls, small toys, food, and water.

A good dog carrier is designed with the comfort and safety of a dog in mind. However, you, as the dog owner, also have a significant responsibility for this. While it may look really cute to have a Chihuahua in a bag, with its head sticking out, you need to remember that the dog has to move regularly as well.
