Ever Thought of Taking a Snow Sauna?

The snow sauna is perhaps not the best known sauna in popular culture. Regardless of when you decide to go in a sauna, it will always be good for your health. And if you have the chance to have one in a cedar sauna with a wood fired sauna stove, which is a true Finnish one, then you really are in a world of luxury. As soon as the stove rocks are hot, they seem to drain all the toxins and stress out of your body, leaving you feeling invigorated and refreshed.

What Is a Snow Sauna?

Traditional saunas are inevitably found near rivers or lakes. Once you have been in the heat of the sauna for so long that you can’t stand it anymore, you can go straight from there into the cold water. This rinses the last little bits of toxins out of your body. This is something that all saunas do, but snow saunas do it even better.

Imagine being in the heart of winter, somewhere really cold, where snow lasts almost all year long. During the long, dark months of winter, it is not uncommon for people to get a bit of cabin fever. By spending some time in a snow sauna, you can actually get rid of these unwanted feelings.

Did you know that in a place like the Keweenaw Peninsula, you will get more snow in the month of November than you would in the entire winter season of much of the rest of the north? Yet even there, you will have to wait at least until Christmas before you can enjoy a snow sauna. The snow simply has to be deep enough to hold one, which means it has to be at least 24 inches.

A snow sauna starts as a regular sauna, meaning you go inside and build up a sweat. But then, when you’re so hot that you can’t cope anymore, you don’t dive into a lake but rather immerse yourself into clean snow. This is why the snow has to be thick enough, because it has to be soft enough for you to go through it, without worrying about hitting and ricks, branches, or other hazards, including the ice layers where snow melted and froze again.

A good snow sauna is all about having that snow flop. Once you have flopped and are completely covered in snow, you have to check out the area that you landed on. You will notice that it will appear covered in dirt. That is your dirt, that you got rid of by sweating it out of your body. To get the best effect, you will have to roll and flop a couple of times, and then get back into the sauna and do it all over again. This really is the best type of sauna out there if you want to become truly healthy inside and out, and it will also help you to beat that cabin fever.
